Sometimes about the comic, sometimes not
August 13th! On the same date in 2013 my first comic started (a special day because of my daughter’s birthday I might add). It has been going for about three years, I learned a lot!
So this time I’m going for a little more quality. I just finished the first seven episodes. Besides giving me a relaxed feeling, working on multiple episodes helps me improve the quality of the story. Tweaking the episodes over a few days, changing little things that feel like big issues in my mind. Also, it brings some much needed consistency between the episodes (mostly I mean the color-temperature and such).
Having a general script helps a lot. I don’t have the story down to the last detail, but I don’t feel that is necessary. Having a general direction and description of scenes is enough. Also now I already have an ending. So this time around, I know what I’m working towards. I have to be honest; I did not like the ending of the first comic, it felt a bit like a cheat, a ‘world-reset’ as one of the commenters wrote. It was adequate, but that’s all. In the beginning of that story I thought it would keep going and going… until I realized it had to end sometime and that’s when I got in trouble, I just didn’t know how to end it, and left a lot of issues unintentionally, unresolved in the process. I hope this will be different this time. I’m sure it will be better. But not as good as the third story. 😉
So, now first things first. I’m going on a vacation, to Turkey of all places (in my defense; I booked a long, long time ago…) I guess it’ll be okay, but it does not feel as relaxing as in former years. Anyway, I’ll be back before August 13th, looking forward to your thoughts on the comic and building sets.
Have you ever gone on a trip to a country or region, which in hindsight might not have been the best location to visit at the time? Or did you realize beforehand (and what did you decide to do in the end?)

  1. I’d still say you’ve done a tremendous job on your first story and the ending is good enough. But I’m fine with the fact that you foudn a way to improve your story telling skills LOL. I hope your art will be as good as for Foolish Lego the Comic.

About your question, I remember travelling to the US in august 2001. At the time nothing to worry about, but 2 weeks after we came back… Well everybody knows what happened. My dad was supposed to fly back right when it happened… Now if you ask me, I guess I’d play it safe and cancel the trip if crazy things happen.

    • I’m home! Nothing crazy and a relaxing vacation. It is a very dual feeling, mainly because the locals seem to work very hard and it makes me sad that some of those people are the victims of circumstances. On the other hand… well…

By the way, that must’ve been a very surreal experience for you (and your dad). It does show you just never know, it really feels like the world has no real safe places anymore (but it could partly be the fast and enormous amount of information that reaches us these days).

  2. Gotta be honest, traveling to places already in turmoil of their own at a time of heightened anti-Westerner feelings…pi3rk is onto something.

I never had any issues with your story telling skills. In fact, I found it difficult to believe that you were essentially making it up as you went along. I think you’ll find, though, that planning and shooting ahead (by a bunch of episodes) is good for your own sanity trying to keep a schedule, lol. I’m working now on the episodes I intend to air from mid-January to April-ish. It’s nice to have a cushion.

Looking forward to the next story!

    • Thank you for the compliments! I even surprised myself with some of the episodes to be honest. I (sometimes) really liked the last-minute ideas that came up under pressure.
Yet, having finished the first seven episodes of the new comic, I already feel a lot more rest. I cannot imagine how you must feel having a buffer that large! I’m hoping to start on the next couple of episodes next week, but first I have to build a new set… that comes with discordant feelings, but it needs to be done on Sunday. As I said many times before… I’m a bit envious of your permanent sets too.
